Monitoring our environmental impact
Monitor
We need multiple indicators for monthly measurement of the efficiency of initiatives we implement in addition to the annual GHG assessment and periodic LCAs. With this in mind, Data4 measures:
- POWER USAGE EFFECTIVENESS (PUE);
- WATER USAGE EFFECTIVENESS (WUE);
- CARBON USAGE EFFECTIVENESS (CUE).
Power Usage Effectiveness
PUE is a key indicator for the data center industry.
A data center’s electricity consumption naturally includes IT rooms as well as all of the areas needed to keep the infrastructure running, including cooling systems, inverters, lighting and power backups.
The data center’s occupancy rate is also a factor the impacts PUE. In other words, the closer the IT rooms are to maximum capacity, the better the PUE.
Having a PUE close to 1 is a significant challenge. Data4 is proud of all the initiatives we have implemented over the years to lower PUE by more than 20%. We have reached a PUE that is close to 1.3 for the newest
data centers.
Water Usage Effectiveness
WUE is an important indicator for the data center industry. It is calculated as follows. Data4 efficiently manages water resources. Our WUE metrics of between
0.03 and 0.1 l/kWh translate this effective management.
CUE
CUE is an important indicator for the data center industry.
CUE is closely linked to PUE which has significantly decreased over the past few years confirms this CUE decrease as new data centers were added, proving the effectiveness of Data4’s continuous improvement process.
