Yet behind every breakthrough lies a less visible but equally critical reality: the physical infrastructure that powers AI at scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rapid growth of foundation models, real-time inference, and generative AI applications is profoundly transforming the data center industry. More than a technological disruption, we are witnessing an unprecedented shift in scale. The challenge is no longer simply to build more capacity, but to design infrastructure that can evolve quickly, sustainably, and efficiently to support the growth of AI across Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>AI is changing the rules of the game<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditional infrastructures were designed for relatively predictable computing workloads. AI is disrupting that balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest generations of GPUs concentrate unprecedented levels of power and heat. In the most advanced environments, rack densities can exceed 600 kW, creating new requirements for power distribution, cooling, and operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, conventional approaches are reaching their limits. Electrical systems must be designed with significant scalability to accommodate future processor generations. Data center architectures must also integrate liquid cooling technologies from the outset, whether direct-to-chip or immersion cooling, which have become essential for dissipating the thermal loads generated by high-intensity AI workloads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AI-ready data center is no longer simply a building housing IT equipment. It is becoming an integrated system where energy, cooling, and connectivity are closely interconnected to deliver continuous performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From data centers to AI campuses<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alongside rising compute density, AI is driving another major transformation: the shift from individual data centers to large-scale digital campuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Demand for computing power is now leading to the development of platforms capable of supporting several hundred megawatts on a single site and aggregating hundreds of thousands of GPUs. This evolution is driven not only by scale requirements, but also by increasing needs for resilience, connectivity, and operational efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Data4, this transformation is already underway. The initial 50 MW cluster launched in 2006 has evolved into a 500 MW hub bringing together several campuses south of Paris, while new AI-ready facilities are currently under development. Across Europe, future campuses are being designed to accommodate several hundred megawatts dedicated to AI workloads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These campuses are not simply larger real estate projects. They are true industrial platforms capable of pooling resources and supporting cloud, AI, and sovereign digital strategies for both enterprises and public-sector organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Energy: the foundation of AI growth<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If computing power is the engine of AI, energy is its essential prerequisite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GPU clusters operate almost continuously and require reliable, low-carbon, uninterrupted electricity supplies. In this context, securing energy resources is becoming a major strategic challenge for both data center operators and the regions hosting these facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long-term energy procurement agreements, or Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), are playing an increasingly important role in development strategies. They help secure electricity availability while supporting the integration of renewable and low-carbon energy sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past two years, Data4 has signed five PPAs with European partners, combining wind, solar, and low-carbon energy generation while advancing its environmental commitments.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.data4group.com\/en\/resources\/esg-report-2025\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.data4group.com\/en\/resources\/esg-report-2025\/\"> The group has already reduced its carbon footprint by more than 13% since 2017 and aims to achieve a 38% reduction by 2030.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sovereignty: A European competitive advantage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The growth of AI is also driving increased focus on infrastructure and data sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While hyperscalers continue to play a central role, a new generation of providers specializing in high-density GPU environments is emerging across Europe. This trend reflects a growing emphasis on regulatory requirements, digital sovereignty, and data localization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compliance with GDPR and future AI regulatory frameworks is no longer a secondary consideration. It is now embedded into infrastructure design from the outset. Territorial anchoring, energy control, and regulatory alignment are becoming key differentiators for European operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When AI optimizes the infrastructure that hosts it<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI is not only transforming the workloads running inside data centers. It is also helping optimize how these facilities operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next-generation campuses rely on thousands of sensors that monitor infrastructure performance in real time. Predictive analytics help optimize cooling systems, reduce energy losses, anticipate equipment failures, and improve overall operational efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gradually, reactive maintenance models are giving way to predictive approaches capable of preventing incidents before they occur. In an environment where computing availability is critical, operational intelligence is becoming just as important as computing capacity itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The challenge of the next decade<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI is not replacing the existing data center model; it is accelerating its industrialization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the next decade, organizations capable of designing, financing, and operating large-scale, low-carbon, scalable, and regulation-compliant infrastructure will gain a decisive advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data centers are no longer simply technical facilities. They are becoming strategic assets that support digital competitiveness, European sovereignty, and the development of artificial intelligence.
